Corporate hospitality a £1bn market in the UK: report

Demand for corporate hospitality in the UK is expected to top £1.25bn by 2013 according to a new report.

In 2008 sales peaked at £1bn, increasing 20% over the last four years.

The findings come in the MBD Commercial Due Diligence’s UK Corporate Hospitality Market Development Report.

Coca-Cola and Visa reveal hospitality plans for London 2012

The sponsors have commenced event planning for the Olympics.

Visa and Coca-Cola are among the brand giants that have descended on London to begin planning corporate hospitality for the 2012 Olympics.

The London 2012 sponsors spoke at the Events 2012 And Beyond conference at International Confex.

Coca-Cola London 2012 Olympics general manager Daryl Jelinek said that the brand was already planning its events programme for the Olympics.

Corporate support can make or break matchday revenue

In order to preserve revenue, analysts suggest leading European clubs will have to make adjustments to corporate ticket prices. With the economic crisis wreaking havoc on businesses worldwide, it will be necessary for clubs to accommodate the dwindling finances of corporate clients in order to maintain their support.

According to Sports Business Group at Deloitte Senior Manager Alex Byars, clubs may be able to fine-tune corporate prices following a shortage of ticket sales because it will give them room to move, as reported by Reuters. Ticket sales are expected to be more difficult than last season, on account of the changing economy and subsequent budget cuts.

Glamorgan’s executive chairman accused of destroying the county

When Glamorgan were awarded an Ashes Test by the England and Wales Cricket Board three years ago, the club’s chairman, Paul Russell, described it as an historic day for Wales. But, with less than five months before the visit of Australia to the revamped Swalec Stadium, the county is bracing itself for a power struggle.

The former Glamorgan and England all-rounder, Peter Walker, is standing to become the president of the county, ­challenging the current incumbent, David East, the former secretary of the Welsh Rugby Union, and he accuses Russell of building a ground fit for Test match cricket but destroying the club in the process.

The Treasury could be forced to reimburse hundreds of millions of pounds of VAT levied on corporate entertainment.

Defence firms, drug makers and other exporters that have spent millions on entertaining foreign clients stand to gain windfall payments from the Treasury following an EU VAT ruling.

VAT paid over the last 12 years on everything from plush hotel rooms to extravagant dinners and even private jets and boxes at Wimbeldon could be reclaimed.

Ditching sports sponsorships can backfire

The most popular game around at the moment appears to be brands dropping sponsorship. Vodafone ditches the English Cricket Board; General Motors pulls out of the Masters Golf Tournament; and 888.com and Saga Insurance dump snooker.

But a new report suggests that while cutting sports sponsorships may save some immediate cash, it does more harm than good. Companies could even face a backlash from fans who feel let down by exiting brands.
